315 Residency: Call for Artists

ABOUT THE 315 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The 315 Artist in Residence program is part of Brookfield Properties ongoing commitment to supporting and showcasing local arts, culture and events. Nestled in the heart of Calgary’s Downtown Core, our properties — Brookfield Place, Fifth Avenue Place, Suncor Energy Centre, and the Bankers Hall complex — play a vital role in the city’s vibrancy. Recognized as one of the world’s most livable cities, Calgary thrives on a dynamic synergy of arts and community connection. Brookfield Properties is committed to fostering this vibrancy both downtown and within our properties.

In Bankers Hall, we have created a space for artists to work and explore. The program provides artists with the opportunity to create large-scale artworks that will be exhibited in high-traffic areas such as our lobbies, plazas, and gathering spaces. The artwork created in the residency must consider one or more of our core values: Education, DEI, Creativity, and/or Sustainability. It will then enter a year-long exhibition tour, making its way through each of our Calgary properties.

Our focus is to empower artists in corporate settings, equip them with soft skills, and provide them with opportunities to commercialize their work.

Studio/Workspace

Currently located on Level 3 in Bankers Hall, the 315 Residency studio is composed of 4,400+ square feet of open space with full-length windows, storage, 12-foot ceilings, and display windows. The artist in residence will have 24-hour access to the studio and Wi-Fi.

Please note: Our Art Studio does not permit the use of spray paints, aerosols, use of heat, perfumes, toxic fumes, flammable gases, etc. These materials must be used off-site if necessary for your work.

Duration of Residency

The residency duration is eight (8) months. This time will allow the artist to manage the required paperwork and administration, move in, experiment with their creative practice, prepare for the exhibition, and execute commercialization projects.

The work will be on display for one year within our Brookfield Properties Calgary portfolio (including Brookfield Place, Suncor Energy Centre, Fifth Avenue Place, and Bankers Hall), rotating every 3 months. These conditions are subject to change. Following the exhibition tour, our global portfolio may choose to profile the work.

The artwork created during the 315 Artist in Residence belongs to the artist who created it and is therefore the responsibility of the artist once it completes its Brookfield Properties Arts & Events exhibition programming.

Accommodation

Brookfield Properties Calgary offers the artist 24-hour access to the studio. Artists are encouraged to utilize the space to explore their practice and work on personal projects during the residency. Lodging, living accommodation and expenses are not included in this residency.

Work Equipment and Assistance

Please utilize your application to indicate what tools, materials, and support you need to complete your program. Through the expertise of our regional and property teams, artists will be assisted with event management and logistics, legal administration and operations.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

To empower artists in corporate settings, equip them with soft skills, and provide them with opportunities to commercialize their work. We are looking for artists with an entrepreneurial spirit, expertise in their practice, and interest in large-scale projects. Artists will have the opportunity to challenge and build their capacities, familiarize themselves with corporate procedures and administrative tasks plus navigate professional relationships.

Expectations for the Artist

Within the 8-month residency, the artist is expected to create the proposed artwork, lead at least one tenant engagement event (i.e., a workshop, artist talk, gallery experience), and prepare for the exhibition. Each residency will include a minimum of one commercialization project, examples of this include: merchandise design and distribution to our tenant base, mural commissions, and other artistic practices. Programming can be determined with the Brookfield Properties team once started.

The exhibition tour will be free and accessible to the public. The artwork created will not be defamatory, discriminatory, disrespectful or dangerous in any sense, including but not limited to religious beliefs, identity, or physical form.

Artists are encouraged to explore new mediums in this residency with the objective of creating a large-scale installation. Brookfield Properties will consider projects that are tangible and stationary, such as sculptures, paintings, woodwork, textiles, etc.
